Pelicans fish collectively and collaboratively. They will hustle the fish together by pedalling underwater with their big webbed feet, encouraging all the fish into a circle, and when there are enough fish there, they will all dive down as one to gobble up the fish. They all come up at the same time, too. It is beautiful - like watching a ballet. *Please see info below.

Birding one morning, we were at a location and so disappointed to find nothing of interest to photograph. We bailed on the first location and this bird was found just a 10 minute drive from where we’d first decided to go, and was it ever worth it! This beautiful Western Tanager hopped right out for us to let us take its picture. *Please see info below.

On my very first (and so far only) trip to Maui, we made our way up the inactive volcano on the island, Haleakela. The summit is ice cold and the air is very thin, making it a little bit hard to breathe. About three-quarters of the way up is a lovely little diversion called Hosmer Grove. This is where we photographed this beauty, found only on the highest slopes on the island of Maui. *Please see info below.

The song of the White Throated Sparrow is like a temptation. When you don’t know what bird is producing this beautiful song, it lures you into the forest to try and find out. Their looks are just as beautiful as their song. *Please see info below.

The graceful and beautiful Great Blue Heron captured here in all its length … times 2! They are skittish birds and apt to fly off at the first disturbance, but this lovely bird stayed put a long time while I took pictures to my heart’s content.

I tried for weeks to get a decent shot of the Yellow Headed Blackbird in flight. I love this one for the mood it evokes. The reeds in the background are not as giant as they seem. This is a trick of the depth of field in this photo.

Photographing wildlife of any type is part skill, part patience, and a large part luck. Being in the right place at the right time is at least half the battle. Here I was lucky to capture this Osprey who had just caught a fish and then settled in high in a tree to set about enjoying his catch. They are magnificent birds.

This gorgeous Cedar Waxwing posed so obligingly for me. They are such photogenic birds, with their tails as if dipped in yellow paint and their striking masks. Cedar Waxwings tend to flock at the tops of trees, flying in and out in groups of four or more. They are fun to watch.

When you are lucky enough to happen upon a whole family of juvenile Great Horned Owls, you take a lot of pictures!! This is one of my favourite shots. I love backlit photos — though they can be tricky. You still need enough front lighting to pick up all the detail.

The Eastern Kingbird — Tyranus tyranus — Is a beautiful bird that doesn’t mind being photographed, often perching nicely in the open and giving us lots of time to get good shots. But to get two babies like this, positioned just so, was a treat.

The Common Goldeneye is fairly abundant in southern Alberta in the spring and fall. These two beauties were perched perfectly with their reflections picked up in the water.

The gorgeous Wood Duck is easy enough to find, but not that easy to photograph. They have this gorgeous plumage (this is a male) in fall and spring … in summer they lose these beautiful colours for a few months. Possibly the most striking looking water bird; as photographers, we never get tired of taking their pictures.

The beautiful White Crowned Sparrow is one of the last to leave the area when the weather starts to cool off in September. They are striking birds, with their white and black stripes. This one is so beautiful surrounded by the warm colours of the trees.

This amazing bird was the object of our search for weeks. Then, the day we finally found him, we crept very close to get this beautiful shot. The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the most sought after subjects of bird photographers.

At more than 10,000 feet above sea level, even in this tropical paradise on the island of Maui, at a 6:00 sunrise, the air is bitterly cold and it is very, very windy. Entirely worth it though to capture the images of the sun coming up well below you.
